IMMERSION NATION RATING
why?: that’s (im)possible, right?
Just for a moment. When you see something impossible… you wonder; Co-founder of The Void experience explains that you can “pry open” these moments; Just long enough for you to step inside.
The edge of (Virtual?) Reality
Can you be really, truly, 100% certain that you’re not living in the Matrix? It’s doubtful. Walking out of the Void experience you might be less certain. Using physical and spatial illusion, The Void is the next step in virtual reality. The thing VR has always wanted to be. You can touch every wall, prop, and laser cannon you encounter in the game.
What it’s really like
Recipe for reality
Ingredients:
1: expert film producer
1: sound engineer
1: game designer
1: magician
Combine ingredients in pot, saute lightly + simmer on low heat for 20 years.
Portion: Serves 2 generations of longing gamers + film aficionados.
For the last 20 years, many have tried to be The Void Experience. You watch a movie and want to be more than just a passive observer. That screen is a 4th wall that you don’t have the option to break.
The void literally opens that 4th wall like a portal. They have you touch a physical wall in front of you, then show you in VR that a portal has opened. Then they make you step through into what had been solid matter just moments before.
The Void is a tactile experience. You don a vest, a backpack and a visor. That vest uses haptic feedback (/ˈhaptik/: n. Relating to sense or touch.) to make you feel the environment. Everything down to R2D2 in their star wars experience can be touched. The Void has actually built smell into certain parts of the game.
Current experiences include:
- Star Wars: Secrets of the empire
- Ghostbusters Dimension
- Ralph Breaks VR (From the ‘Wreck-it ralph’ movie)
Coming soon:
- Nicodemus: Demon of Evanishment
Reports from the front lines of Immersion Nation are saying that there are quite a few more VR worlds in the works for The Void. One of the co-founders also created Evermore: a fantasy themed park in Pleasant Grove, Utah.
It has been hinted in past interviews that there may be plans to use The Void Experience’s VR technology within Evermore park. This would mean an entirely new generation of fantasy based RPG games.
Currently, there are 11 active locations. Both nationally and internationally. You can find the list of locations on their website [linked below]. It’s new tech so, suffice to say it skews to the more pricey end of things with experiences lasting about 15 minutes. For now..
despite the new tech, most who come out of the experience feel it was well worth it. It’s said there are occasionally minor glitches in the VR, but because The Void isn’t solely reliant on the VR, the illusion of immersion is rarely damaged beyond repair.
Straight outa Utah. This tech start up is a far walk away from the silicon valley as the classic nerve center of tech innovation. Single handedly, they are not only revolutionizing VR, they are raising serious questions about how well we know reality in the first place.
ImNation Quick Points:
• Is headquartered in the same town as Evermore park
• Has locations internationally
• One of the co-founders is a magician
• Even smell is used in these in void experiences
