IMMERSION  NATION  RATING

Where were you when the Death Star blew?

For more than 40 years, Star Wars has been excruciatingly far, far away. Since 1977, we’ve inched closer and closer to bring this world to life. Through video games, role play, the donning of robes, and the glow of lightsabers, we’ve tried to assemble fragments of that galaxy.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s edge is not a park, it is our turn, our story.

What is Black Spire?

A once thriving hub of commerce on the outskirt planet of Batuu. Since lightspeed travel opened new transport routes through the galaxy, Black Spire has become a community on the margins of society. For many, the fringe is a perfect place to avoid the bustle …and scrutiny of easily accessible worlds.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is the largest single world immersive experience ever created by Disney. Galaxy’s Edge is designed based on markets in Istanbul and Morocco, to capture the texture of ancient and modern coexisting in one space.

The most fanfare has been attached to Smuggler’s Run. The Millenium Falcon adventure in which you take control of a borrowed Millenium Falcon for the ‘Ohnaka’s Transport Solutions’. 2 pilots, will be backed up by two gunners, charged with fending off harassment by the first order. If the pilots and gunners fail to do their job however, 2 engineers will be there to pick up the pieces and repair the ship in real time.

Essentially, Smuggler’s Run is a 6 person flight simulator, team game. The ship moves in response to maneuvers and attacks, while an absurd level of HD graphics tech plays out the story in front of you. Beware though, if you don’t return the ship in good condition, your reputation will follow you through the park.

Other highlights include:

Rise of the resistance: Slated to open after the park itself, you’ll wander into a hidden alliance camp outside of town. You’ll be deployed on a mission, but captured by the first order. Before you escape thestar destroyer however, you’ll encounter innumerable storm troopers, lifesize AT-ATs, and… rumor has it that both Rey and Kylo Ren are on board.

One has to wonder, if you’re escaping from a star destroyer, will there be escape room elements in this experience?

Space food: One meat roasters shop is built around a podracer engine protruding from the ceiling. The owner is convinced it cooks your space meat better than anything else. Naturally, a tatooine style cantina is present where -along with 3 more vendors- you’ll find a host of food and beverage items drawn from the Star Wars ethos. There is talk of the tatooine famous blue milk.

Lightsabers: In Savi’s workshop you can create a custom blade, personalized to the kind of force you find within yourself. Only 14 people are allowed in the shop at once so turn around is about 15 minutes. Disney is hinting at some new tech in the sabers created here so we may yet be surprised by this attraction.

John Williams: Authenticity is the name of the game here. As such, you can’t have music coming from nowhere. Black Spire’s soundscape will come out of the various stalls, shops, and attractions you encounter. All of the music is, of course, composed by the only one who could. John Williams.

Immersive story: As mentioned earlier, your reputation follows you. The Galaxy Edge app will allow you to interface with your teammates in the alliance, the first order, or the morally ambiguous scoundrels. The app lets you: Translate alien tex, scan cargo crates to discover their contents, hack outposts for your team in the infinite tug of war built into the park, and scan to intercept transmissions that will launch quests within the park.

Naturally, those just scratch the surface of what’s to be found but the experience, large as it is now, will grow as the Star Wars world grows. The app, speaks to the greatest Immersive potential for this experience.

Reports from the front lines of Immersion Nation are saying the app may be the single most exciting thing in the park. The unveiled functions imply potential for a deeper level of play experience. Though the app is certainly not being framed as the star of the show, if Disney wants to make it so, it could be in an instant.

ImNation Quick Points:

• Largest single world land ever built by Disney

• Multiple layers of game play

• Your reputation follows you

• Closest thing to a living RPG ever created

• There are 2: One @ Disney world, one @ Disneyland
