IMMERSION NATION RATING
Immersion with a touch of wanderlust
Site specific immersion is what often comes to mind when thinking of any given immersive theater -or immersive theater experience. Whether you think of Sleep No More, Meow Wolf, or any escape room. They are anchored in place and, often, in time. A women’s bathroom within the California Institute of the Arts saw the creation of something of a very different stripe.
The Speakeasy Society creates visceral Immersive worlds move and grow.
What is the Speakeasy Society?
A Los Angeles based Immersive production team that creates story in unique spaces. They have created performances themed from: The Wizard of Oz, Johnny got his gun, A Christmas carol, and more. Gaining steam and revere in the Immersive community since 2012, they have in many ways become the darling of Los Angeles’s Immersive community.
What are their shows like?
They appear in different locations: You might find yourself…
• In the garden of a church, Invited to a royal wedding in the land of oz.
• Being coerced into picking sides in a battle through time and space…
• Trained to fight for the ‘right’ cause
You’re brought into the story, being whisked, or buffeted along by actors. Embedded into emotional stories that shape the…
…world you’re learning more and more about. You learn as a story unfolds.
While their habit has been to maintain a running series of shows within one story line, they also have been doing isolated immersive events in tandem.
Their version of ‘Johnny Got His Gun’ put you inside the of the heart wrenching world of the world war 1 era story. Starting in 2014, ‘The Johnny Cycle’ gave way to ‘The Kansas Collection’. The Kansas Collection’s conclusion, chapter 10: The Portal, begins its run in april.
Starting in 2016, The Wizard of Oz themed storyline has developed over the last 4 years for an increasingly entranced community of fans. In the midst of this long production, The Speakeasy Society produced ‘Wild Party: A Jazz Age Immersive Performance’ in January of 2018.
Reports from the front lines of Immersion Nation are that The Speakeasy Society is now working with ‘Two Bit Circus’ who has been sitting on the edge of VR and AR experiences. The Society’s website says they are producing some variety of dinner experience.
That said, both Two Bit Circus & The Speakeasy Society hold a truly impressive track record. The idea of their collaboration speaks to the potential of another important chapter in the broader saga of immersive theater.
Coming soon: Kansas Collection, ch 10. The Portal (final chapter)
