IMMERSION  NATION  RATING

Tumbling Down

Theater sits on a 45 degree angle. A slippery slope between the stage and the audience floor. You look down and you see immersion, potential, and possibility. But you can’t quite see the floor. You know if you push yourself off the edge of the stage, you won’t be able to stop. Gravity will take you…

So. What do you do?

Third Rail Projects pushed themselves off the edge of the stage -and never looked back.

What is ‘Third Rail Projects’?

Third Rail initially started in 2001 as a dance company, but joined the pioneers of immersion. They are known for ‘Then She Fell’: an intimate, Alice in wonderland themed, performance inside an abandoned hospital ward. From their home in New York, they continue to redefine the boundaries of immersion. The minds behind Third Rail Projects are masters of Immersive experience; Their name irrevocably attached to immersive theater.

What it’s really like

A glimpse of ‘Then She Fell’:

When you walk in you’re given a ring of keys that go to locks you’ve yet to discover. You will find yourself separated from those you arrived with. The purpose of this experience is to disorient.

Largely performed through dance, unlike sleep no more, it is not a silent experience. More than that, you’ll find that characters seek to…

….engage you in events. Feeding you little ‘Drink me’ cocktails or learning the absurd dance of the tea party with the mad hatter.

The ‘drink me’ cocktails served in strange -period appropriate- bottles are actually crafted to pair with the scene and environment.

You are there to experience a somewhat macabre version of wonderland, as you begin to learn bits and pieces of the underlying mysteries. Bits of the book itself are recited in conversation and precise choreography knit into a cohesive feeling of falling as you lose yourself within.

An incredibly small audience of 15 people allows the experience to maintain structure while giving every different audience member a unique perspective on the world they’ve discovered. The minimum age of 21 reinforces the multisensory importance of the 2 hour show.

As one of the earliest high visibility examples of immersive theater, ‘Then She Fell’ transformed third rail’s identity and has added to the broader conversation of immersive theater.

Current shows: Then she fell, Wolves in the Walls.
